This course aims to help first-year students establish a foundation for university learning and self-development during the early stage of their college life. It serves as an “introductory map” for students as they enter university. The course guides students to develop an initial understanding of university life, learning directions, and future development by exploring self-understanding, knowledge of the university, learning methods in the age of AI, and social and safety responsibilities.
Through this course, students will be able to recognize their personal traits, learning styles, intrinsic motivations, and career interests; become familiar with the university’s history and culture, campus resources, and learning support systems; learn to use AI and digital tools to enhance self-directed learning; and understand the roles of university students in social participation, public safety, sustainable development, and civic responsibility. In doing so, the course lays a foundation for students’ four years of university learning and personal career development.

Additional Note: Integration of AI into the Course
This course combines in-person instruction with asynchronous online practice to help first-year students understand the basic concepts of artificial intelligence, become familiar with the University’s AI learning resources, and develop appropriate approaches to using AI.
Approximately two weeks of in-person instruction cover AI applications for learning, relevant University resources, and important considerations for AI use, including verification of generated content, academic integrity, personal data protection, copyright, and user responsibility. The course provides shared teaching materials, A First AI Lesson for University Freshmen, together with prerecorded short videos introducing precautions for AI use. Instructors may use the slides for explanation or incorporate the videos into classroom teaching. Students may also use these materials for review after class.
The course also includes two weeks of asynchronous online AI practice. Students follow instructional videos and carry out hands-on exercises at home, applying the concepts and precautions introduced in class to their use of AI tools while gaining experience in independent learning and human–AI collaboration.
Alignment with the Future Talent AI Competency Framework
A. Ability to Learn with AI
The course introduces the basic concepts of machine learning, generative AI, and large language models. Examples involving reading summaries, identification of key points, and idea generation help students understand how AI can support university learning. The course further introduces role setting, background information, task constraints, and output formats in prompt design. Students learn to communicate their needs clearly, refine their prompts step by step, and review and revise AI responses. Corresponding online instructional videos also support independent learning and hands-on practice.
B. Ability to Use AI Responsibly
Through examples involving fabricated biographical information, numerical calculations, and dietary recommendations, the course introduces AI hallucinations, errors, and bias, guiding students to verify facts, data, and cited references. It explains how to disclose AI use transparently by identifying AI’s contributions to idea generation, organization, drafting, editing, and technical assistance. The course also introduces principles of academic integrity, copyright, personal data protection, and information security, reminding students to protect sensitive and confidential information and take responsibility for their final work.
C. Ability to Solve Problems with AI
Using scenarios such as meal planning for first-year students and report preparation, the course demonstrates how to translate needs into AI tasks with clear context, objectives, and constraints. Students are guided to break down problems, obtain information and suggestions in stages, check intermediate results, and use targeted revisions or canvas features to improve content that does not meet their needs. For example, meal planning requires consideration of personal circumstances and available food options, while report preparation involves progressively defining the problem, analyzing information, and checking cited sources. These examples help students understand the process of collaborative problem-solving with AI, which they can explore through asynchronous online practice.
D. Human Capabilities That AI Cannot Replace
The course emphasizes students’ agency in learning and creative work. Students learn to understand real-world problems, select appropriate suggestions, incorporate their own experiences and perspectives, and make revisions based on their own judgment. Examples of writing revision and reflective reporting demonstrate how to adjust tone, draw on personal experience, express a position, and provide supporting reasons. Students are also guided to review their work for accuracy, originality, appropriateness, legality, and ethical responsibility, developing critical thinking and independent judgment in human–AI collaboration.
