This course aims to provide students, who typically inhabit an abstract bodily experience, with a completely different bodily encounter. While the body of drama appears concrete, even within that concreteness there remain distinct modes of usage: realistic and stylised. This traces back to classical forms of performance. Whether in ancient ritual ceremonies or later in traditions like Kabuki, Noh, or William Shakespeare’s dramas, the tri-unity of drama, music and dance remains preserved. Thus when drama travels across the surface, the dance-like quality and musicality lie hidden behind, supporting and forming the dramatic dynamic energy. This course will allow students to experience how that dramatic kinetic energy is activated, how it becomes a flowing river, and will teach how to analyse the structures that either maintain or cause the collapse of that dramatic kinetic energy.

This course will delve into the core of creating dramatic conflict and explore it from different perspectives. We will experience realistic, non-physical exercises to see how everyday behaviors create conflict. Then we will enter the world of mime, moving from realism to impressionism, to see how the ancient theatrical genre creates illusions and steals the dynamic energy of other things. Finally, we will go to the even more ancient animal transformation, where we will explore animal rituals and simulations, ultimately enabling us to freely traverse between the worlds of realism and impressionism.
