1. To understand the dual nature of the script as both a literary text and a performance text
This course aims to guide students in understanding that a script is not merely a functional tool for stage or screen production, but a distinctive literary genre that possesses both readability and performability. Through close reading of Chinese traditional opera, modern spoken drama, and contemporary Chinese-language plays, students will examine how dramatic texts simultaneously carry narrative, lyrical expression, and stage directions. The course further encourages reflection on the differences in meaning that arise when a script is read as a literary text versus when it is realized through performance, thereby fostering a comprehensive understanding of the literary and performative dimensions of dramatic writing.

2. To become familiar with the basic structures and linguistic characteristics of dramatic narrative
The course introduces fundamental principles of dramatic narrative, including plot development, dramatic conflict, character motivation, and scene construction. By closely analyzing Chinese dramatic texts, students will explore how dramatic language—through dialogue, monologue, sung passages, and stage directions—condenses psychological depth and emotional tension within a limited textual space. Students will also learn to distinguish dramatic language from narrative prose, cultivating sensitivity to rhythm, subtext, and the expressive functions of theatrical language.

3. To develop skills in textual analysis through the study of classical and contemporary scripts
By selecting representative works from the Chinese literary tradition alongside modern and contemporary Chinese-language plays, the course trains students in close reading and comparative analysis of dramatic texts. Students will learn to analyze scripts from multiple perspectives, including plot structure, character construction, linguistic style, and thematic concerns. Through this process, they will gain insight into the aesthetic ideals and cultural meanings of dramatic writing across different historical periods and literary forms, thereby establishing a solid foundation in dramatic textual analysis and criticism.

4. To cultivate practical skills in scriptwriting and reflective creative practice
Building upon textual study and theoretical discussion, the course places strong emphasis on hands-on scriptwriting practice. Students will complete a series of creative assignments, including short scenes, dialogue exercises, and adaptation projects, transforming literary analysis into dramatic writing. Through classroom workshops, peer discussion, and revision processes, students will be guided to reflect critically on authorship, stylistic choices, and their relationship to literary tradition, fostering the development of Chinese literature students who possess both creative competence and reflective awareness.

5. Integration of AI Thinking and Practical Use of AI Tools
This course approaches artificial intelligence as a significant issue within contemporary literary creation and textual production, rather than merely as a technical instrument. By introducing students to the operational logic of generative AI in language modeling, narrative generation, and stylistic imitation, the course encourages them to treat AI as a form of “othered authorship” against which questions of authorship, creative agency, and literary judgment may be critically reexamined.
