地理資訊系統(Geographic Information System，GIS)是一門綜合性學科，結合地理學與地圖學，已經廣泛的應用在不同的領域，包括環境調查、資源管理、路線規劃、災害防治、主題圖繪製等等。本課程主要目的是希望同學瞭解且學習一套自由軟體QGIS (Quantum GIS)系統，該系統不但可以完全免費使用，而且還能轉換成中文化的介面。學生學習本課程後，可以熟悉QGIS系統的功能與操作，並針對有興趣的事件或議題，進行資料收集與製作，最後完成屬於自己的數位專題或新聞地圖。

GIS是許多領域中重要的分析工具，本課程主要目的是希望同學瞭解且學習一套自由軟體QGIS (Quantum GIS)系統。課程內容主要分為三部分，第一部分介紹有關GIS的基本概念；第二部分QGIS功能的操作練習；第三部分為選取有興趣的事件或議題，並完成數位專題製作。
GIS is an important analytical tool in many fields. The purpose of this course is that students will understand, learn and operate a set of free software QGIS (Quantum GIS) system. The course content of this class is divided into three parts.
1.Let students understand the basic concepts of GIS.
2.To learn and practice the QGIS software system.
3.To select an interested events or topics, and complete the thematic map.

This course provides an overview of geographic information system. The major themes include examining what GIS is and what it can do, identifying the spatial data and how to transform the three dimension real world into two dimension maps, and integrating models to explain the spatial information.
