Aimed at the development and significance of basic geographical concepts and theories that inform geographical thinking and the geographical imagination. This course is concerned with the trends and history of geography and is designed to introduce students to key debates, both past and present, on the nature and scope of geography as an academic discipline. It therefore sets out an essential context for understanding contemporary research in human and physical geography. The major episodes in the history of geography are discussed in relation to wider political and cultural developments. Specific topics covered include the history of exploration; the relationship between human and physical geography; and the role of geography in the nation-state. Students who complete this subject will be able to think critically about different schools of geographical thought; be able to evaluate theoretical concepts from geography and elsewhere; and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the dynamic and contested nature of the discipline.

This is a course on geographic thoughts. A set of related key geographic issues and concepts, with relevant geographers and regional cases, are chosen to build up the discourse of each week. They includes 1) map and mapping, 2) space and place, 3) the man-milieu relationship, 4) region and zoning, 5) landscape, 6) spatial interactions, 7) governance and social form, 8) Geographical Information Sciences, 9) globalization, 10) environmental changes, 11) sustainability. These issues and concepts have their own geographical and historical roots. However, it is the content rather than the history of them the focus of the course.
