This course is designed to guide students in understanding the development of LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology and its applications in contemporary spatial digital modeling. It aims to cultivate hands-on skills in operating and analyzing point cloud data. The course begins with an overview of the historical evolution of LiDAR technology and its application across fields such as architectural design, cultural heritage, and urban environments. It then introduces several techniques used in current-condition digital modeling, including micro-LiDAR scanning, photogrammetry, and point cloud model construction.
Through practical workshops, students will operate various sensing tools in real-world settings, gaining insights into the precision and limitations of different modeling techniques across multiple scales—from large-scale environments and individual buildings to detailed structural components. Students will also learn workflows for cleaning, aligning, decomposing, and analyzing point cloud data. The course culminates in an applied project where students will use LiDAR to analyze a designated site, enhancing their spatial observation and data interpretation skills.
In parallel with technical practice, the course also features weekly case studies of contemporary design. These case discussions—covering architectural design, spatial narratives, and material strategies—serve as a reflective platform that bridges hands-on work with conceptual thinking. Through these case analyses, students will have the opportunity to reconsider the interconnected roles of “measurement,” “representation,” and “construction” from a designer’s perspective.
Expected Learning Outcomes include: the ability to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of various modeling techniques, understanding of digital modeling logic at different spatial scales, proficiency in site scanning and data processing, and the capacity to conduct spatial decomposition and preliminary design based on point cloud data. These skills will lay a foundational competence for future work in architectural and spatial design, restoration surveys, and cultural heritage documentation.
