As the science that deals with the physical and human characteristics of the earth’s surface, geography studies the patterns, processes, variation and change in time and space. A central goal of geography is to understand the interrelationships between physical and human environments. This is an introductory course about the spatial differentiation and organization of human activity and its interrelationships with the physical environment in a globalizing world. Important subjects to be discussed will include the dynamic and complex relationships between peoples and the worlds they inhabit, the basic geographical techniques and tools by which geographers study the complexity of places and regions, and the philosophy which informs their analyses all a part of a global synthesis. It is aimed at establishing an intellectual foundation that will enable a life-long and life-sustaining geographical imagination: an essential tool for today's students to confront tomorrow's global, national, regional, and local challenges. This course is still organized around the four themes of geography--physical, cultural, locational, and regional-- and the major techniques of the discipline. Geographical techniques introduced include map, spatial, landscape and regional analysis, and geographical information science.
